About
Fruits of Work is an academical project, a non-profit digital platform and a tool dedicated to reduce secrecy around pay information and by that tackling labour exploitation and pay discrimination with a focus on the creative industries.
We consider secrecy around wages and salaries as a tool of oppression. Most places of employment work hard to keep information on wages opaque, as they can’t always justify existing differences. As talking frankly about money can be difficult, Fruits of Work offers a completely anonymous way to share just as much information you feel comfortable with.
Fruits of Work was massively inspired and informed by a number of Google Spreadsheets dedicated to the same issue, especially “Graphic Design Salary Transparency”. Fruits of Work should be understood as a more elaborated version of said spreadsheets. As an independent platform Fruits of Work does not rely on a third party environment like Google. The form that populates our database is developed as a tailor-fitted solution to make it more comfortable to enter data that is optimized for evaluation and comparison. The spreadsheet view is still available and our custom solution further offers more graspable and discoverable ways of data visualization. Furthermore the database of Fruits of Work is not only fed by its form submissions, but also aims at integrating different kinds of preexisting data, like various Google Spreadsheets and surveys concerned with pay information.
Fruits of Work aims at becoming a go-to resource regarding wage and salary information that offers beneficial insights for workers of all kinds. The platform wants to empower individuals to fight for fair compensation and against labour exploitation and pay discrimination. While the collected data will by no means be a perfect overview of the industry, it’s our belief that eliminating salary speculation is one vital step in moving towards a fairer and more inclusive work environment.
Fruits of Work is an academic project in development by Jens Schnitzler since 2020 at HFBK Hamburg (University of Fine Arts Hamburg) to research working conditions especially in the field of graphic design and neighboring disciplines. Jens studied at FH Münster and HAW Hamburg before entering HFBK’s MFA program in the Digitale Grafik class of Konrad Renner and Christoph Knoth. Working in graphic design since 2014 and in coding since 2018, he gathered experiences in these fields through different forms of employment. Over time and through the personal exchange with colleagues, the necessity of further consideration of contemporary labour relationships became more and more evident.
